Three Indian Rapper Murderers Arrested

Indian police have arrested three men accused of killing hip-hop superstar Sidhu Moose Wala, seizing an arsenal of weapons, including an grenade launcher from the suspects.

Moose Wala -- also known by his birth name Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu -- was shot dead in his vehicle in the northern state of Punjab in the month of October.

The 28-year old was a well-known performer in India and also among Punjabi communities around the world particularly in Canada and Britain.

Special police commissioner H.S. Dhaliwal told reporters in Delhi on Monday that three suspects had been taken into custody in the western part of Gujarat over the weekend.

Police recovered high-explosive explosive grenades, a rocket launcher, an assault rifle, as well as electronic detonators from the suspects.

Local media reported that Goldy Brar is a gangster from Canada who claimed responsibility for the death of the rapper and was in contact with the hitmen on the morning of it.

According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, a police officer stated that Brar had phoned one of the shooters before the incident and instructed him to ensure death of Moose Wala.

Moose Wala rose to fame with catchy songs that attacked political and other rappers and portraying himself as a man who fought for the pride of his community, delivered justice and shot down enemies.

He was criticized for encouraging gun culture through his music videos where he often posed with firearms.

His murder also put the spotlight on the criminal gangs in Punjab, a major transit route for the flow of drugs into India from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Many observers link the rise in violence among gangs and the rise in illegal weapons use to the narcotics market, which mainly includes heroin and opium.
