Minecraft's "Smite" enchantment lets you do more damage to "undead" enemies like zombies and withers.- I love can give the Smite enchantment to both swords and axes.

There are about two dozen different enchantments in Minecraft, and while some of them have pretty straightforward names - like "Fire Protection" or "Respiration" - others are more confusing. For example: What is "Smite?"

Smite gives you extra damage against undead mobs

In Minecraft, enhancing your weapons with the "Smite" enchantment gives them extra power against undead enemies, like zombies. You can only use the enchantment on swords and axes.

Minecraft considers all these enemies to be "undead" and affected by Smite:

- Chicken Jockeys- Drowned zombies- Husk zombies- Phantoms- Skeletons- Skeleton Horses- Skeleton Horsemen- Spider Jockeys- Stray skeletons- Withers- Wither Skeletons- Zoglins- Zombies- Zombie Horses- Zombie Villagers- Zombified PiglinsEvery level of Smite you add gives your weapon an extra 2.5 points of damage with every hit against an undead mob. This means that at Smite V (the highest level), you'll get an extra 12.5 damage with every swing.

Smite will appear randomly as an option at your enchantment table, just like any other enchantment. The best way to guarantee that you'll get Smite is to keep enchanting books until it appears as an option, and then combine the Smite-enchanted book with your weapon at an anvil. Check out our guide on how to enchant for more information.

Important: In Minecraft : Java Edition, the only way to give an axe Smite is to use an enchanted book. In Bedrock Edition, you can use an enchanting table for both swords and axes.

Smite doesn't affect your weapon in any other way. Against non-undead enemies, it'll act just like a normal sword or axe.

This is why most players consider Smite to be a worse version of Sharpness, another enchantment that gives you extra melee damage against all enemies. You can't have both on the same weapon at once.
