Larkhall man jailed for killing his friend during a row following a gaming session

18 August

A man was sentenced to eight years in prison for killing his friend during an argument over playing a PlayStation.

Dale Gardiner, 25, fatally stabbed 23-year-old William Wardrop at his home in Larkhall, South Lanarkshire.

Gardiner was found guilty of culpable murder under provocation following a trial in June.

He was sentenced to eight year prison in the High Court of Glasgow on Thursday.

Gardiner, who was originally accused of murder before being found guilty of a lesser crime, claimed he was acting in self-defence during the incident that occurred in the early hours of the 22nd May 2020.

The men had been at Gardiner's Riverside Road home where they played with the games console.

A third person there said that things were "friendly enough" before the pair started to fight.

Despite the argument being calming at one point the victim was fatally knifed.

Mr Wardrop was able walk before collapsing. He was declared dead in the hospital despite paramedics trying to save him for over 40 minutes.

Family devastated by tragedy

Judge Lady Rae stated that Gardiner had not started the fight, but had delivered a blow that killed the judge.

She told the judge that there were a lot of mitigation factors in this case. "You have a minor prior conviction which I will overlook.

"But, I cannot ignore the fact that a young person lost their life because of your actions.

"His family has been devastated by that loss."

His family released a statement at the time of his death and stated that William was a cherished father and brother as well as fiance, which will be greatly missed by all.

"He will always be in our hearts."
