Zoom is a popular tool for attending weddings during COVID-19. But what about having the entire wedding taking place in the metaverse? An immersive virtual world where every guest can play as an avatar? It turns out it's already taking place.

The internet reaction has been mixed. Some are enthralled by the idea while others are pining it. Others mention that similar events have been taking place for years on different platforms that have more appealing graphics.

It's hard to think of anything worse than anything I'd like to do other than stare at cartoons of people on a conference call. You can call it whatever you like.

The New York Times reported that Traci and Dave Gagnon got married in the metaverse on the Labor Day weekend. The couple had an in-person wedding at a golf course in New Hampshire, but also had a wedding in the virtual world at the same time for any friends and family who weren't able to attend. Instead of a video conference the couple decided to let the entire event unfold in a virtual world with photos from the live wedding broadcast in the virtual space.

Jezebel quickly reacted to this news, stating in the headline: "The Metaverse may be the most awful thing that has ever happened to weddings." The article also pointed out that this can make it difficult to respectfully decline an invitation to a wedding.

Article content on Twitter, many users disagreed that this was a new idea.

One user wrote, "This was happening 20 years ago, so why is this so special now?"

Others said that graphics in games such as Second Life and World of Warcraft were more appealing fifteen years ago.

Another user on Twitter wrote "Really difficult to think of anything better, or anything I'd rather do rather than look at cartoons people are talking to on conference calls." "Call it whatever you want."

Some were enthralled by the idea. "A novel way to celebrate weddings! What could you have imagined an event like this? The possibilities keep growing," one wrote. Another wrote about an ethereal wedding in the Eiffel Tower.

The Gagnons explained that having their wedding in the metaverse meant people could attend who might not be able to attend in person. Traci's sick maid of honour was still able to walk her down the aisle, and Dave's friend who was unable attend because of his wife's already-existing health issues, was able to deliver his toast.

The metaverse that hosted the wedding was created by Virbela the company that, as per its website, "builds immersive 3D worlds for work, learning and virtual events." With the Virbela platform there is no VR headset is required and it is compatible with nearly every computer.

Gamers were not thrilled with the result.

"Graphically, Metaverse looks about the same as a PlayStation 1" says an article on dexerto.com. It is a gaming news site.
